The car's brief is to provide functional, understated, comfortable luxury and versatility on the road, and it succeeds with seven usable seats and comfortable cruising. However, the car's size and weight lead to considerable fuel consumption, and the engine range lacks plug-in hybrids or V8s. The latest model, G05-generation X5, has a more luxurious interior, refined engines, and an improved driving experience. It still offers a dynamic edge with pacy steering, good body control, balanced grip levels, and crisp handling response. However, some rivals offer more material richness, space, comfort, and 4x4 capability. The oversized kidney grille on the X5 has received criticism. The '45e' plug-in hybrid version is an excellent option for tax-savvy fleet drivers.
Mercedes-Benz is focusing on the luxury SUV market with a new vehicle platform and the release of the fourth-generation GLE. The new GLE is larger than its predecessor, offering more space and a more upmarket luxury feel for passengers. It features the latest MBUX infotainment system, dual widescreen instrument and Command control displays, and a giant-sized head-up display. Engine options include turbo diesel and turbocharged petrol models with a range-topping option of 362bhp and 369 lb-ft. Suspension options include steel coil suspension and a 48-volt active air suspension system. The GLE 350 de diesel plug-in hybrid offers an impressive electric-only range of over 60 miles. The GLE is a good choice for those prioritising comfort, refinement, luxury, and practicality.
