The 1.0-litre TSI 95 engine is our favourite from the Volkswagen Polo's engine lineup. While its 94bhp output may sound scraggly, this engine pulls firmly from low revs due to how quickly its turbocharger spins up. It tends to make them more powerful 1.0 TSI 110 with 108bhp seem like an unnecessary extravagance. But that's not to say you can’t be extravagant. Though the standard seats in Life models could benefit from more side support, as do the sports seats in Style and R-Line models.

But when it comes to engine options for the Volkswagen Golf, you could go with the 128bhp 1.5 TSI 130, but we believe the more muscular 148bhp 1.5 TSI 150 makes more sense. It's significantly quicker getting up to highway speeds or passing that tractor you've been stuck behind.
